There exists a group called CAN (Cure Autism Now) whose primary aim must be fairly self evident from their name!
They’ve recently started a section on their site where parents can upload images of their autistic kids with a little bit of text attached. here’s a sample.
Aaron is the light of our life, we are so lucky to have him.
Huh? They are lucky to have him? Then why do they want to ‘cure’ him? Seems a more accurate statement would’ve been:
‘We are lucky to have him’ so we want you to donate money to CAN so we can help make sure people like him aren’t born in future.
I’d rather see parents channelling their efforts into raising awareness and tolerance. Not this. This, to me, verges on eugenics.
Woah, thats a little hard to understand.
Autism people (from what ive understood) are jsut people with a different perspective (I know thats simplified it a bit) – so why isnt their perspective less valid and in need of a cure?
*and why do they feel they need a cure
Sorry for spamming, but found this:

And thought you might like to have a read, quite funny how its no longer front page news.
I agree Kev
Those parent quotes are weird. For example
” —- teaches us love, compassion and patience. He is a hard worker and a free spirit. His personality overcomes autism and he shows us that he is a happy boy who knows what he wants.”
and
“——is simply the sweetest soul that I know. He is non-verbal and yet loves more deeply than most people who speak love with mere words.”
Why would you want to change that?????
to put it quite simply, alot of more able people with ASD do NOT want a cure.
I am one that doesn’t. I can also see the potential for Nuerodiversity. Especially in research areas as we see the world differently, yes the world is a struggle for us, but you take away neurodiversity and things would be different, perhaps certain things would NOT be discovered.
