A Book Baton

19 Jul

Ben from Binary Moon has passed me a book baton which as an avid reader I feel compelled to pass on.

Number of books on the shelf

Erm: lots! I have two large bookcases and one smaller bookcase. I’d guesstimate 400 books. Have I read all of them? Except for the wifes crappy John Grisham novels of course! Several times!

Last book purchased

In The Night Room. Peter Straub. Not his best but still pretty damn good.

Book reading right now

Koko. Peter Straub. Reading a new Straub always sets me off to read Koko again which I consider one of the best books ever written.

Last 5 books read

1. Flashman on the march. George McDonald Fraser. Hilarious as ever.
2. Only Forward. Micheal Marshall Smith.
3. The Algebraist. Iain M Banks.
4. Shade. Neil Jordan.
5. Diamon Dogs, Turquoise Days. Alistair Reynolds.

Books that mean a lot to me

The Dune series. Lord of the Rings. Koko. The Flashman collection. Catch 22.

Passing this along to

Orac gave this to Autism Diva as a “meme” recently. Autism Diva guesses that “meme” the same thing as “baton”. Orac answered it a week and a half ago… maybe.

Autism Diva will try to answer it, but I won’t answer all the questions exactly, being stubborn as she is.

How about Kathleen Seidel. She loves books and has been known to sell a hundred or two.

That’ll teach me to pay attention ;o)

I’ll mail Kathleen – thanks AD!

Maybe I should pass it on to David Kirby? ;o)

Being the lazy blogger that I am, batons are a great way to not let nidahas rot 😛 Will try to get something up there soon…

I have just read other parts of this very nicely done blog… including the “Make Me Normal” page. Also, I am about to finish resorting the bookcases in this room (Three of them… they span the entire 11 foot long wall, and go to about 6 feet high. They contain a 30 year collection of science fiction from both hubby and myself… though I have started to read other things and use the library more).

From the library in the past year I have picked up some interesting fictional accounts of autism. One of them is from a children’s author who shows what it was like early in the 20th century, _The Silent Boy_ by Lois Lowry:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0440419808/ … another one is a delightful tale written by a former teacher of autistics in the UK (my favorite of the three), _The Curious Incident of the Dog at Nighttime_:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0385512104 …. AND… now one by an author who has an autistic son and is well represented on our bookcase because my husband has bought several of her hard science fiction, _The Speed of Dark_:

The last book goes into what happens if there is a “cure” and the consequenses. Also the author has a very nice essay on autism with a link to a good set of books:
    http://www.sff.net/people/Elizabeth.Moon/autism-general.htm

By the way, I just returned to the library _Space for Women_ by Paula Freni, so-so… I much preferred _Promised the Moon_ by Stephanie Nolan (both about the 13 women who went through the astronaut testing at the same time as the original Mercury 7 in the early 1960’s — then were told that the US Space program did not need them). Now I am starting on _Child of the Fighting Tenth: On the Frotier with the Buffalo Soldiers_ by Forrestine Hooker (edited by Steven Wilson, since she died in 1932 leaving a rough manuscript).

Autism Diva believes that the last book Kirby read was, “Lies and the Lying Liars who tell them.” by Al Franken. There’s a chapter in there called “How to lie with footnotes.”

Of course, Franken was trying to expose the disgusting nature of lying in print and using trickery to fool people in print. Kirby may have missed that bit, too ethical maybe?

It’s just a supposition, though, maybe the last book he read was a manual on how to write for, “My Martian Love Child Channels Elvis” tabloids.

I’ve already received this baton from a different source, so I’ll have to pass this time. Although there is a new meme in town… 😉
