Autism Podcast Interview

Michael from Autism Podcast interviewed me yesterday. It was the first time I’d been interviewed via Skype or trans-atlantically which was a novel experience. I was a bit concerned at how well the connection would hold up with VOIP still being a technology in its infancy but I think both Michael and I were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the voice connection.

The interview itself was very interesting and thought provoking (for me anyway) – its always good to examine (or re-examine) your own ideas and motives I think and Michael asked me some good questions on the purpose and aims of the Hub as well as asking me about Megan and how we approached raising her.

I tried to lighten my voice and flatten my local accent for US audiences (my voice is stupidly deep and Midlandsy) but I still come off as a cross between Robbie Williams and Barry White. Bah.

Also, here’s a little snippet of Meg :o)

I’ve only listened to about half so far but it’s so nice to hear your voice saying such positive things. Excellent work.

I was surprised by how little lag there is considering the distance between you two. I fully expected some big delays after each question and your response but it was almost like hearing a local call. VoIP has come a long way.

Another great vid of Meg too. Thanks for sharing that with us. She’s beautiful.

Check you out with all the long words! πŸ˜‰ Although you can hear the Midlands creeping in at certain points…

    Excellent video as well. πŸ™‚

Megan is so beautiful. Thanks again for your part of that podcast… and for all the other advocacy you and your wife do.

I thought it sounded well, actually.

You seemed very well composed and spoke very clearly. I liked it.

Well done. Being interviewed isn’t easy (and nor is doing the interviewing, actually… as I have reason to know….) :/

NM: yeah, I was expecting a lag too. Part of my job means Skyping people in mainland Europe occasionally and the lag there is pretty bad. Weird that this was better.

Matt: You mean my attempts to talk posh only half worked? ;o)

H: Ha! Next on my plan for world domination…..guest spot on Wogan! Or possibly not ;o)

Ms C and Dave: thanks :o)

Chuh like, I kept thinking I was listening to Simon Baron-Cohen and that was like totally confusing! (sorry, still chanelling some valley girl) The one word I couldn’t get was “eyesighted.” You were talking about behavioral therapy and the CDC, and you said,

“the child has to learn that when they’re going to this place, when they’re undergoing this sort of assessment that they aren’t necessarily being eyesighted…”….

Well … actually after I listened a few times I heard something more like “isolated.” Which might say as much about my hearing as your accent.

Its like so totally ‘isolated’ – rilly! ;o)

Unbelievably, I understood every word, but then my daughter has been obsessed with some British television shows lately, so I think I have a practiced ear as a result. πŸ™‚ Anyway, great interview, and I’m really glad I finally know how to pronounce your last name.
