Autism-vaccine books, an indication that the tide has turned?

13 Nov

We recently discussed here on LeftbrainRightBrain two books, both due out in January. The first, The Panic Virus: A True Story of Medicine, Science, and Fear, is by a new name to the discussion, Seth Mnookin. The second book, Deadly Choices: How the Anti-Vaccine Movement Threatens Us All, is by Dr. Paul Offit, a name well known in the autism/vaccine discussion.

With these two books due out in the near future, it is only natural to look back at the recent past. I am thinking of two other books on autism and vaccines, Dan Olmsted and Mark Blaxill’s “The Age of Autism: Mercury, Medicine, and a Man-made Epidemic“, and Andrew Wakefield’s “Callous Disregard: Autism and Vaccines: The Truth Behind a Tragedy. Both of these books continue the old story of autism caused by mercury in vaccines and autism caused by the MMR vaccine. There is really no new science and there never was much in the first place. Sure, Age of Autism tries to apply their same “correlation is causation” arguments about mercury to other medical conditions in history, but that isn’t science. Callous Disregard is more about Andrew Wakefield’s excuses for his own misdeeds than about the science anyway. The books have been given a lukewarm reception by their target audience (neither has really sold in large numbers, and the trends are clear that the books are selling through the promotion by “friendly” blogs and book signings). Even Dan Olmsted himself recently blogged about how the formerly friendly press is now ignoring his book.

Jenny McCarthy has moved on, at least for now. The same can be said for David Kirby (but he is still giving appearances at autism-parent conventions as some sort of expert.) But, the days when Evidence of Harm: Mercury in Vaccines and the Autism Epidemic: A Medical Controversy could hit the New York Times best seller list are in the past.

This isn’t about some sense of schadenfreude or an “our author’s books are doing better than your author’s books” sort of competition. Rather, this is a time to ask (once again), has the tide turned? Do two flops tell us that the heyday of the movement over?

Sure, there will always be a SafeMinds and a Generation Rescue out there pushing the idea of a vaccine-induced autism epidemic. But one researcher I know has told me that vaccines just aren’t even coming up as a point of discussion any more. Not in conferences (the real kind, not the parent-convention kind). Not even in public lectures.

Has the tide turned? I hope so. I really do.

    Sully, while you say that it’s not about whether one author’s books are doing better than another author’s – really it is. The book “Age of Autism” was touted as “groundbreaking” but has sold very poorly as I’ve chronicled on the link to my name.

    I think it’s worthwhile to begin to track the sales of “The Panic Virus” and “Deadly Choices”, and so I will do this here. Note that these two books are not yet released, so we do expect their sales figures to be very low at the beginning.

    The Panic Virus:

    November 13, 2010, 13:40. Amazon #128,499

    Deadly Choices:

    November 13, 2010, 13:40. Amazon #124,054

    Note that B&N doesn’t give a sales ranking to unreleased books. It will be very interesting to see if the Amazon and B&N rankings of these books track better than they did for Age of Autism.

    What surprises me is that Age of Autism has generally been given quite good shelf and table presentation in Borders stores, but people still don’t buy it.

  5. Chris November 13, 2010 at 22:33 #

    At my local Barnes and Noble it had a prominent location on the New Releases table right by the front door. It also was prominently displayed on a table of “Thought Provoking” books (by which I placed a book, Dangerous Pregnancies, about the 1960s rubella epidemic). Now it is sitting on the bottom shelf in the medical section.

    I noticed there are no more copies of Callous Disregard (I think they had total of about ten copies, if that). I did finally see the new edition of Autism’s False Prophets on the shelf at about eye level. Using a B&N gift card I bought what I thought was the only copy of the Maurice Hilleman biograpy, Vaccinated, but I see another has been put on the shelf.

    Checking sales rankings on Barnes and Noble:

    Autism’s False Prophets: 70,136 (marked as a textbook, so I can’t check if there are copies in local stores)

    Callous Disregard: 45,910, in stock on two out of five stores

    Age of Autism: 97,822, in stock on all five stores

    Evidence of Harm: 258,130, in stock in two out of five stores

    Vaccinated: 256,474, in stock in three out of five stores

    The problem is those rankings don’t tell the whole story. A book that has been out for years with the same ranking as a new book may actually have been a better seller. I am pretty sure I’ll see AoA on the “Last Chance” shelf in the vestibule of my local Barnes and Noble.

    seems vax/anti-vax true believers time energy would be better spent on ensuring quality support/programs for those not cured…and on early interventions…

    seems vax/anti-vax are true believers more concerned with showing what brilliant scientist they are vice helping our children/adults friends on the spectrum…

    are they/we beating dead horses…who, except the true believers, gives a crap whether/not vax cause autism…

  11. Julian Frost November 25, 2010 at 06:28 #

    @Stanley Seigler:

    who, except the true believers, gives a crap whether/not vax cause autism.

    You are missing the point. The “true believers” have tried (and largely succeeded) in turning research away from autism and towards vaccination. A huge amount of time and money that could have been used to investigate technologies and training to help autistics was squandered on what turned out to be a lie.
    The second point is that the anti-vaxxers have largely hijacked autism advocacy, and that a number of children have died of vaccine preventable diseases. There is a growing backlash against the anti-vaxxers. A lot of us fear that autism advocacy will be tainted and harmed by its unwilling association with anti-vaccination lunacy.

  12. Kev November 25, 2010 at 08:29 #

    Stan, as Julian says, there’s a finite amount of money going towards autism research. I’m not bothered about a cure per se but I would like to know more about autism. The more science gets done disproving a non-existent link, the less money there is for decent research into housing for adults etc.

    Also, I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s noticed rumblings of discontent towards the whole autism community from the general public because they feel we’re all anti-vax. This perception needs to be challenged before the stigma rubs off on our kids and friends.

    Lastly, anything that challenges vaccine uptake rates with no basis in science or fact needs to be challenged because its simply the right thing to do. Vaccines save lives – simple.

    thanks.

    shooting from the lip…so perhaps point missed…but is there any significant research money now spent on the VAX link…congratulation, you and many LBRB contributors have been most successful.

    opine: your fear is misplaced…its almost paranoia…

    the MIND institute (UCDAVIS, CA USA) established by anti-VAXers has not publish any (to my knowledge) papers re a VAX link for several years…sadly the MIND publish or perish crew still gets grants to present useless papers…

    let the anti-VAXers argue with themselves…”Vaccines save lives – simple”…

    then OTOH a second thought…maybe your anti-VAX crusade is a worthwhile endeavor…it might help reduce funding the cure/causes and false hopes peddlers…and redirect funds to improving the quality of life for those not cured.

    OTOH-OH what if there is a link…

    stanley seigler asked, “. . . is there any significant research money now spent on the VAX link?”

    You might try searching the presentations and abstracts at the most recent International Meeting for Autism Research. Excepting the (apparently religiously-motivated) poster from a group that seems to believe that ASD is associated with vaccine production from tissue culture stocks derived decades ago from the cells of an aborted fetus, you’ll see that the experts in the field generally ignore the vaccines-cause-autism hypothesis except to ask why some parents still erroneously believe that the apparent increase in the prevalence of ASD is caused by vaccination.

  16. stanley seigler December 2, 2010 at 19:52 #

    [brian say] experts in the field generally ignore the vaccines-cause-autism hypothesis except to ask why some parents still erroneously believe that the apparent increase in the prevalence of ASD is caused by vaccination.

    this is also my experience from a very limited read…BTW thanks for your work/part in attaining the current state…OTOH;

    do you ever have a thought there may be a link…research makes long held “truths” not true, eg, the sun revolves around a flat earth and a lil more recent;

    Researchers discovered microbes that are able to subsist almost entirely on arsenic, a finding that may be the first exception to the formula long thought to govern the basic chemistry of life.

    The tide is not going to turn any time soon, I guarantee it. I asked the pediatrician to NOT give my daughter the hep-B shot at the hospital when she was born, but he forgot to tell the staff, who gave it to her without asking my permission. When I took her home when she was three days old she was screaming constantly, day and night, I rocked her in a rocking chair all night every night for several days. It was vaccine-induced encephalitis, and she is autistic now. I had a tetanus booster when I was nineteen that paralyzed both my arms for two days. Now I have MS, and some years ago had an attack that paralyzed my left arm and leg for over a month. There are THOUSANDS of us who don’t need to spar back and forth about whether or not vaccines or safe, we see the reactions in our own bodies and those of our precious children. Look up Patti White, the school nurse who testified before Congress twelve years ago about the hep-B vaccine. She said she had done the research so she could reassure parents that the vaccines were safe, but quickly realized that the hep-B vaccine was the reason that after 1995 the school system in Missouri was absolutely INUNDATED with children with autism, the children who had gotten the vaccination in the hospital starting in 1991. A hundred-fold increase in autism in just a few years, with devastating results. Do you guys not know any of the tens of thousands of parents with normal children who spiraled down into autism and/or bowel disease within days of getting the MMR?

    Thousands of disabled chldren who will require billions in tax-payers’ dollars for their eventual lifelong care. They are the tide, and I don’t see how you are going to turn it. Half of parents now realize that it’s the vaccines and are going to choose their children over supporting Big Pharma and its spokesman Paul Offit.

      cynthia parker,

      if the tide isn’t turning, it never was very big to begin with.

      Yes, we are all quite familiar with autism and the supposed link. If there were “tens of thousands” of kids who “spiraled down” within days of MMR, the studies would have picked that up.

      Good luck to you.

    Cynthia I am sorry to hear about your families apparent sensitivities to vaccines. These reactions are however rare. I wonder if in 10 years, if the tide has still not turned you will still be convinced that MMR/vaccines cause ASD? Or if by then you may be more willing to look at the actual statistics? I dont expect knowing the facts to make you feel any better. You have clearly been through a rough time and are now convinced vaccines were responsible, and I appreciate why you have come to that conclusion based on those experiences. But I hope you will reconsider extrapolating your family events onto the wider community.

    As Sullivan says above, good luck to you.
