Jenny McCarthy – Autism mum

5 May

As surely as day follows night, more and more loony ideas about autism and what it is will come along. Bad mothering, secretin, vaccines, TV…..and now…well…..

Jenny McCarthy is a US celebrity who has an autistic child. She also has a website that discusses her, uh, interesting stance on autism.

The day I found out I was an adult Indigo will stay with me forever. I was walking hand in hand with my son down a Los Angeles street when this women approached me and said, “You’re an Indigo and your son is a Crystal.” I immediately replied, “Yes!” and the woman smiled at me and walked away. I stood there for a moment, because I had no idea what the heck an Indigo and Crystal was, but I seemed so sure of it when I had blurted out “Yes!” After doing some of my own research on the word Indigo, I realized not only was I an early Indigo but my son was in fact a Crystal child.

A what? She’s an ‘Indigo’ and her son is a ‘Crystal child’???? what exactly are these things?

The Indigo child concept was first publicized in 1999 by the book The Indigo Children: The New Kids Have Arrived, written by the husband-and-wife team of Lee Carroll and Jan Tober. Carroll insists that the concept was obtained via conversations with a spiritual entity known as Kryon.

Wikipedia

The Crystal Children began to appear on the planet from about 2000, although some date them slightly earlier. These are extremely powerful children, whose main purpose is to take us to the next level in our evolution, and reveal to us our inner power and divinity. They function as a group consciousness rather than as individuals, and they live by the” Law of One” or Unity Consciousness. They are a powerful force for love and peace on the planet……The terms “Indigo” and “Crystal” were given to these two generations because they most accurately describe their aura colours and energy patterns. Indigo children have a lot of indigo blue in their auras. This is the colour of the “third eye chakra”, which is the energy center inside the head located between the two eyebrows. This chakra regulates clairvoyance, or the ability to see energy, visions, and spirits. Many of the Indigo children are clairvoyant

Starchild

Okaaaay.

And – of course – She’s anti-vaccine – what wingnut isn’t?

So why am I discussing Jenny McCarthy? It seems she’ll soon be doing a show on autism (she has a soon-to-be-released book to flog). I am sincerely hoping that people examine very carefully the sort of utter kook she is when this show airs (if it does) and consider her message – whatever it may be – in terms of the source beliefs that have inspired it.

    Um, wow.

I heard about Indigo children long before 1999.

I’m both, though, so technically, I’d be a “Dark Crystal.”

    Probably, a Skeksi.

  2. Ms. Clark May 5, 2007 at 09:13 #

Can someone disambiguate “crystal children” and “the Borg,” please?

I guess we’re waiting for someone to come up to Jenny on the street and say (happy and excitedly), “You are an AIR HEAD and your child needs vaccinating!!”

Maybe Jenny will “immediately reply, ‘YES!'” and go and investigate the statment… and find it TRUE! Someone contacted the spirit being called, “Krayon” and found out Jenny’s color is “clear,” the color of air, the stuff her head is filled with…. the cool thing is that Jenny has the Rosie O’Donell seal of approval… WHOA!

  3. Another Voice May 5, 2007 at 14:40 #

It seems to never end. When your career tanks or book sales drop, just say something really stupid about autism. Then you can be “controversial” and back in the news.

Jenny McCarthy was at a Thoughtful House benefit 2 1/2 years ago. She played in a celebrity softball tournament.
I do not know if she is affiliated with the Thoughtful House, but I would assume so, being she did the benefit.
    Jeanette

  5. Ms. Clark May 5, 2007 at 18:41 #

Now I have to go check to see if Thoughtful House learned about Crystal therapy from Jenny, maybe they are selling purple eagle gemstone necklaces http://www.indigomoms.com/news/article/health/crystal/142/ (I learned about that from Kristina’s blog)

But I’m guessing Wakefield hasn’t come near a purple eagle gemstone because:

bq. Purple Eagle helps resolve the causes of your most limiting condition by strongly breaking up the pockets of physical and inner disharmony that are perpetuating it. …

Who should have stronger or bigger pockets of inner disharmoney that Wakefield… that dude’s gotta have some major karma issues.

I’m guessing Jenny doesn’t own a blue sapphire necklace:
    http://www.indigomoms.com/news/article/health/crystal/143/

bq. Sapphire promotes useful thoughts and useful thinking.

bq. When someone allows mental garbage to flow through his or her mind, this garbage often collects in the head, causing the physical brain and all the head’s functions to become malnourished, strained, and stressed

bq. If you are using Blue Sapphire to remove disharmony in your head, to improve your eyesight or hearing, or to resolve imbalances in the brain, it should be worn continually without interruption for at least several months. This is also true when you are using Blue Sapphire to clear mental garbage. The process is comparable to taking out the household garbage—it re-accumulates quickly and, if not removed, starts to overflow.

bq. If you are using Blue Sapphire simply to organize your mental processes, you can wear it for shorter periods without losing ground. The Sapphire will pick up its work and begin organizing your thoughts wherever it last left off.

There are dosage recommendations, too. Rounded blue Sapphires bigger than 5 mm can be detrimental. Too much blue sapphire stirs up too much garbage, so you have to be careful with the dosage. The more transparent the stone the more powerful it is, little black traces, as seen under a microscope undo the power of the sapphire… this is tricky business.

Jenny would love Buttar. He could help everyone balance their chakras with gemstones.
http://www.amazon.com/Gemstone-Energy-Medicine-Healing-Spirit/dp/0924700246/ref=si3_rdr_bb_product/102-3252752-6756152 He gives gemstone therapy a big thumbs up in the front of this book. He says they have helped him be more attentive to his wife. (Later they got divorced)
“I use Green Tourmaline and other gems on a regular basis. The bottom line is that the gemstones do make a difference–although I sometimes have a difficult time believing it myself!”

    http://www.gemisphere.com/gemstoneMissions/qut_mission.htm
Quartzite is good for hyperactivity, but not recommended for pregnant women…

Opalight treats insomnia and an overactive mind. That’s be good for lots of autistics.

Is DAN! selling these on their website yet? NAA and ASA could sell them to raise money, and cure autism at the same time! I’ll suggest that they study these at the MIND Institute.

Ms Clark, in case you didn’t know, many supermarket Sapphire scanner windows have a very large sapphire crystal in them.

You can tell the glass ones because they are scratched. If the scanner window isn’t scratched, it is likely to be sapphire.

Who knew that supermarket checkout persons have low levels of mental garbage due to their proximity to large crystals of sapphire.

  7. Ms. Clark May 5, 2007 at 20:25 #

Wow. But are they all natural sapphires? Still, a sapphire is a sapphire… isn’t it and the un-natural ones are more pure. The sapphire scanner windows help the clerks maintain mental clarity because the glass and plastic windows get scratches which can force the clerk to type in the SKU by hand, causing mental garbage and distracting the clerk from his meditations…

I wonder where Martha Herbert stands on the use of sapphire and purple eagle gemstone necklaces… I bet she has one of each of all the gemstone necklaces in different sizes so she can correct the dosage.

One of the funniest things I’ve seen is a quack allergist (who lost his medical license for a time for experimenting with stuff on people, the stuff wasn’t approved by the FDA and was sort of smuggled into the country from the UK, where it was made in someone’s kitchen… so I heard) Anyway, this guy is an MD allergist in San Francisco and reviewed information about NAET (about as credible as Indigo children) at the MIND Institute, while sucking down most of the autism woo in big gulps, he had to say that he didn’t think NAET was scientifically based. He kind of smirked when he said it, too. He is a colleague of Martha Herbert’s.

  8. clone3g May 5, 2007 at 21:31 #

That would be a think layer of sapphire applied by vapor deposition. Aluminum oxide. Uh-oh, aluminum like they add to vaccines? Bad stuff.

  9. daedalus2u May 5, 2007 at 22:15 #

Actually, sapphire is alpha alumina, the aluminum oxide that is used as an adjuvant is gamma alumina. Very different things.

  10. clone3g May 5, 2007 at 22:24 #

Well if we are going to be pedantic about it the sapphire applied to glass windows on bar-code scanners is very different from being a “large sapphire crystal” isn’t it?

Adjuvant can be aluminum hydroxide and alum as well. So I guess we should remind our antivax friends of the importance of chemical structure and form as well as the abundance of aluminium in our natural world.

  11. daedalus2u May 5, 2007 at 23:05 #

For the most part, the sapphire layers are not deposited on, the windows are either a single crystal sapphire laminated onto glass, or solid single crystal sapphire.
So it really is a big single crystal of sapphire. They are not that expensive. I had several of them about 6 inches by 2 by 1/16. The ones I had were as-grown, so there is some roughness to them.
They are made by wicking liquid aluminum oxide in a graphite mold and slowly letting it crystalize as it is drawn out (Sapphire production ). Actually, once I had a single crystal sapphire filament about 50 feet long.

  12. drama mama May 6, 2007 at 02:28 #

Well, I might be unpopular around here for saying this, but one thing I’ve learned whilst running around this Autism block is that everyone has their own way of coping. Whatever works for her.

  13. Jannalou May 6, 2007 at 02:31 #

I’ve known about “Indigos” and “Crystals” for literally years. One of my friends sort of believes in it, but not as extremely as some of these other kooks.

What scared me was the day I was babysitting and the mother happened to have a copy of The Care & Feeding of Indigo Children. Being a curious sort, I skimmed it and tried to figure out if I was an Indigo or not. By the time I was finished my short review of the book, I was feeling ill – physically sick to my stomach. I put the book back on the shelf, and was fine after a little while.

Later that day (or maybe the next day), I looked up some information on this garbage online, and the same physical feelings came back. I refuse to get into it now, even though I think it needs to be dealt with, because I know I can’t physically deal with something that evil. (And that’s my Christianity coming through, but hopefully my reasoning here makes sense.)

  14. livsparents May 6, 2007 at 02:40 #

Oh boy! As if you guys dn’t have enough grist for the mill comin’ out of my side, now here comes a whole silo in Jenny!

  15. Ms. Clark May 6, 2007 at 04:09 #

    livsparents,

We beamed you over to our side a month or two ago. We didn’t tell you because we thought it would be too much of a shock. See, it didn’t even hurt to come over, and as Kev says, “we have cookies.”

So don’t worry about Jenny, she’s over there on the other side with Wakers and Buttar. 🙂

  16. Kev May 6, 2007 at 04:31 #

Drama mama – if she were using this as a coping mechanism then that would be one thing. However she is now presenting herself as an ‘authority’ on autism (after all, she’s a ‘celebrity’ which seems to be all the authority one needs these days) and selling a book and presenting a TV program on the subject. I think autism has enough altie quackery to cope with at the moment without this.

Jeanette – fascinating link to Wakefield. I’ll dig around for more on that. Maybe Brian knows something?

  17. Laura Cottington May 6, 2007 at 05:03 #

I checked her site out a month ago and was a little freaked (and didn’t get it). Thanks for clarifying. Oh ya, she was on The View on Friday, and guess what, her and Rosie made an appeal to the Discovery Channel to do a week long show on Autism, ranging from causes to cure (like Shark Week). Good Lord, I don’t think I could handle the pair together a second longer!

  18. Kev May 6, 2007 at 05:17 #

    Shark week?

  19. Do'C May 6, 2007 at 05:43 #

An entire week devoted to programming about sharks on cable TV (the Discovery Channel). Good stuff if you’re a marine biologist, or just in to that sort of thing.

  20. Phil Schwarz May 6, 2007 at 07:59 #

Maybe they could do Jump The Shark Week about woo causes-and-cures for autism…

  21. Jeanette May 6, 2007 at 12:44 #

I just found a connection between Ms. McCarthy and TACA (Talk About Curing Autism). In the past, she has given some of the proceeds from book sales to TACA.
On The View, she had told Rosie she had the “perfect Autism Organization” to donate money to. Could that be TACA or Thoughtful House?

I’d prefer to be beamed in the NEXT century, with Jean Luc and Data. Too much testosterone and logic in Kirk’s century. Spock reminds me too much of you guys; I’d rather have Data to talk to…

  23. Ms. Clark May 7, 2007 at 00:21 #

Data and Spock are both here already. We beamed them over for some help. They post under pseudonyms, of course…. I think Spock posts as “ALL Ur Mercry R B Long to Us” here, something like that. Data posts here as Barbra Fishkind … or maybe he’s “Who put the I’s in Illuminati?”

    bq. Autism: An Epidemic?
A closer look at the statistics suggests something more than a simple rise in incidence
By Scott O. Lilienfeld and Hal Arkowitz

bq. If the figure of “one in 166” has a familiar ring, perhaps that’s because you recently heard it on a television commercial or read it in a magazine. According to widely publicized estimates, one in 166 is now the proportion of children who suffer from autism. This proportion is astonishingly high compared with the figure of one in 2,500 that autism researchers had accepted for decades. Across a mere 10-year period–1993 to 2003–statistics from the U.S. Department of Education revealed a 657 percent increase in the nationwide rate of autism.
Not surprisingly, these bewildering increases have led many researchers and educators to refer to an autism “ep idemic.” Representative Dan Burton of Indiana also declared in 2001 that “we have an epidemic on our hands.” But what’s really going on? …continued at Scientific American Digital

YYYYYEEEEEEHAAAAWWW. I haven’t read it yet, but it’s s’posed to be good.

  25. Crash Test Mommy May 7, 2007 at 01:54 #

Oh, man, I KNEW it was all connected. From a comment on Jenny’s forum:

“99% of autism cases can be traced back to vacinations (even though doctors will deny it) vaccines are laced with mercury and other deadly poisons. expose the vaccination and 9/11 fraud Infowars.com”

I wonder why Pharma stocks do so well when they must have to shell out so much $$ to buy off all the pediatricians.

  26. LennyNKendra May 7, 2007 at 04:14 #

I heard Jenny is really Lenny Schafer’s love child. Is that true?

  27. jypsy May 7, 2007 at 10:38 #

Karen Simmons of Autism Today is also big on gemstones…

  28. Big White Hat May 7, 2007 at 15:43 #

Jenny was a space cadet before she gave birth. Some things don’t change.

And people think I’m strange for being a Christian.

  29. jypsy May 7, 2007 at 22:04 #

Oh and this just in…. look what else Karen Simmons is into:
“This letter is to bring to your attention a product that has helped many children.

Offered by the Health and Wellness Research Institute, natural liquid zeolite seemas be to major breakthrough in detoxifying the human body of the carcinogens, heavy metals, viruses, bacteria, fungi, and overall acid conditions that promote and cause disease.”

  30. daedalus2u May 7, 2007 at 22:52 #

I tried to post this yesterday when it was slightly more timely.

Actually, high testosterone is a sign of low NO.
NO inhibits the cytochrome P450 enzymes that make steroids, so low NO disinhibits steroid production and moves it in a more androgenic direction. High NO abolishes testosterone, so low NO will increase testosterone.
I think the inhibition of “my” bacteria by antibiotics in animal feed is the mechanism by which animals get bigger, fatter and reach sexual maturity sooner (just as humans have done in the past 150 years).

  31. missmy714s May 8, 2007 at 01:15 #

Can’t someone just please bring back pharma-grade quaaludes?

  32. Do'C May 8, 2007 at 06:15 #

    Hi Jypsy,

I know it’s wandering off topic, but don’t miss our (notmercury too) discussion with a DAN! practitioner about NCD Zeolite. It’s pretty insightful I think.

  33. jypsy May 8, 2007 at 12:53 #

Doc, I caught it, that’s why I figured I’d mention here about Simmons & Zeolite (the path went Jenny M –> Gemstones –> Karen S –> Zeolite) I was going to say in my initial post about Karen being into gemstones that “she’s also into spamming” when I got spammed with her Zeolite letter. She runs (owns) Autism Today and I once saw her at an autism conference as keynote speaker. She started by going on about gemstones and passing some around… I don’t think it would be inaccurate to say most people were greatly disappointed in her talk and my own interaction with her there was downright creepy

  34. lee May 9, 2007 at 20:47 #

I think anyone who can help bring attention to Autism is wonderful. As a mother of a 10 years with it, we need all the help we can get. Let’s cut her some slack and see what she can do. And thank God each day for the help.

  35. Ms. Clark May 9, 2007 at 23:03 #

As a mother with 47 years “with it” myself having an Asperger’s syndrome dx and as the mother of an adult on the autism spectrum, I could only hope against hope the Jenny the pathetic Air Head will keep her dim bulb ideas to herslef. If she had something meaningful and helpful to say that would be different. People could die or be seriously harmed based on her frightening them away from vaccines. They might forego beneficial therapies while they put all their “energies” into figuring out which crystals to buy and how often to dose their kids with their crystal woo energies.

Did I mention she credits angels with doing something or other for her devotees? Maybe with the right angel crystal necklace and the right sage smudge stick burning and proper chanting (helps to hire a shaman, no doubt) a kid could be cured of autism, right? After all there’s no autism among the Hmong and Mien in Laos, right?
    http://countrystudies.us/laos/59.htm

  36. Crash Test Mommy May 10, 2007 at 02:27 #

Unfortunately, the crystals have harmonically unconverged for Jenny’s tech staff; her web site says it is down until June. Darn! I was looking for a chuckle.

I feel sorry for all those who hate on Indigos and don’t understand our revolution or our purpose here… it’s so easy to laugh at and hate on what you don’t understand. I’m certainly not an airhead, and I’m so glad that Jenny McCarthy has the guts to voice what so many believe to be “kooky…” maybe because they’re jealous that they’re not psychically gifted… and hey, if you aren’t gifted, then why should anyone else be? The special ones must be nuts… because otherwise that might mean that you’re missing out on something… lol
too harsh of a reality for most “normals” to accept…
as an indigo and as the life-long partner of an indigo who was mislabeled autistic and doped up unfairly… don’t hate on what you can’t even begin to comprehend. And go take some more drugs… it’s obviously done a fantastic job of dulling your mind to what’s really out there.

Indigo Rose – I’m sorry that you feel that I’m ‘hating on you’ (strange turn of phrase) but in order to clarify and make sure that there’s no bad blood between us I’d just like to state for the record that I’m really sorry I led you to believe I hate you. I just think you’re mad as march hare. Sorry for the confusion.

My aura is somewhat indigo with a reddish tinge. It looks bruised to the casual observer. It’s not easy.

  43. Lucas McCarty May 10, 2007 at 21:04 #

A lady comes to a website frequented by Autistic people and asserts that we are all ‘normal’ without a hint of irony?

She is also certain that we are all ‘doped-up’. I don’t think many of us have actually had any drug treatment for Autism, there isn’t anyone seriously suggesting drug treatment is neccessary except for a few kooks.

I do actually wonder what this person believes the difference between an Autistic and an Indigo is apart from the invented conditions they apply.

  44. Ms. Clark May 10, 2007 at 22:12 #

I have a hard time believing that drugs weren’t involved in the creation of the indigo child and crystal child myths… Like:

bq.Dude, pass me the pipe will yah? I’m seeing the , uh, clearer message, thing now… I’m feelin’ that spririchal zone thing… It.. it… it’s about pink, no not pink… indigo… indigo something… indigo auras … and some junk about angels and chakras and… I think we can make money with this, dude,…

  45. Lucas McCarty May 11, 2007 at 07:51 #

When I was little I thought that scientists made discoveries by looking into microscopes and they would see things like microscopic hydrogen fuel cell blueprints, formulas for medicines written down on really tiny pieces of paper and the it was basically the really smart germs inventing it all but dying before they could use it.

So every so often another scientist would ask the guy looking in the microscope “See anything we can make money from yet?”.

They try to tell me this is not true, yeah but think of all the things THEY don’t want me to know!

  46. Tom May 11, 2007 at 21:47 #

    Dear Jenny,
Thank you for all you have done to bring autism out in the open.
My grandson is autistic and, fortunately my daughter knew early on that things weren’t right. She has done a tremendous amount of research on the subject and came to the conclusion that the ABA protocol was best for Justin. Pam and several other mothers with autistic children woked long and hard to establish a school based on the Princeton ABA method. It took several years and a lot of hard work, but the school, Garden Academy, officially opened last month in West Orange, NJ. My daughter is very anxious to read your new book, Louder Than Words, as she is convinced diet has a decided impact on Justin’s ability to learn. He is allergic to so many food groups and has exzema, etc.etc. She went back to school and got a second Masters Degree in special education to better help Justin. I marvel at her strength as she has 2 boys and in addition to driving Justin to school, (he’s been going to a special program about 45 minutes from their home as Garden Academy hadn’t opened), raising awareness in the community and all the while she finds the time to be at her son Steven’s baseball, soccer, basketball games as well as art class and tutoring.
If there is any possibility of getting a copy of your new book prior to September, it would be greatly appreciated. Naturally, I will be only too happy to pay whatever it costs.
Thanks for all you’ve done to bring this condition to the public. You are obviously a loving mother and a concerned citizen.
    God bless you.
Many thanks from a greatful father/grandfather.
    Sincerely,
    Tom Timen

  47. HN May 11, 2007 at 23:24 #

Why on earth want to read what an actress has to say about autism… as opposed to someone who is autistic like Temple Grandin or even to someone with an actual eduation like Roy Grinker?

There are so many better and more knowlegible people out there than someone who is pushing “indigo” fairytales.

When I found out my son had a neurological based disorder I read books by Temple Grandin, Oliver Sacks, William Calvin (my son had seizures, so his book about “Conversations with Neil’s Brain” was very interesting)… and more recently I read Roy Grinker’s book “Unstrange Minds”.

Someone please, please, please tell me why Jenny McCarthy, a celebrity who seems to be bereft of any formal science/medical training, would be a better than the above authors.

  48. daedalus2u May 12, 2007 at 02:04 #

To learn what not to do?

  49. Ms. Clark May 12, 2007 at 02:13 #

Can someone explain how Tom got this blog confused with Jenny’s indigo_dimwit.com board?

Why would Jenny–a certifiable AIR HEAD–be a preferable source for information to someone with an actual job, like a piano tuner or an electrician??? The woman posed in Playboy? Multiple times? Exccuuuuuse me?

Oh, I know what makes her an autism expert, per wikipedia
“In 1996, McCarthy landed a small part in the comedy *The Stupids*

“Though McCarthy initially rose to fame because of her sexual image, a frequent source of her celebrity derives from toilet humor, particularly the shock of seeing a beautiful woman urinate, vomit, pass gas, or pick her nose.”

“Another Candies ad, which did not cause as much controversy, found McCarthy passing gas in a crowded elevator. A sketch on her MTV show centered around her character, a well-coifed business woman, answering the question of “What did you have for lunch?” by forcing herself to vomit all over a table (which she then ate on-screen). The direct contrast of McCarthy’s reputation as a sex symbol and this often grotesque humor is closely associated with her image. This image was taken to a new extreme in her film Dirty Love, which featured McCarthy’s character sitting in a massive pool of her own menstrual blood.[1]”

She “dated” to put it nicely, other men and other women when she was married… goodness this woman is just a paragon of virtue isn’t she?

Gack. No wonder she wants so associate herself with an image of purity, crystals and angels. She trying to clean it up, apparently. Ick. Ick. Ick.

  50. HN May 12, 2007 at 02:56 #

    Daedalus2u: LOL

Okay, Ms. Clark… that is more than enough information on this “celebrity”. Though I confess, I could not recall if she were an actress or a singer. Not that it matters, in just a few more years she will be just another Indigo “has-been” wondering what happened to her Crystal child.
