Autism mum needs help of autism community – please help

16 Jun

I tweeted a few days ago about the awful thing that has happened to my friend Melissa, an American single mum with two sons of whom one is autistic. BUt nothing can say it as powerfully as her own words.

Is where I am.
To say I’m overwhelmed is an absolute understatement.

My house burned down today.

Yes, I’m serious.
We’re fine- everyone made it out safe.
But our cat did not make it.

I don’t really even know what to write at the moment, other than my heart is breaking.
You think you’re prepared for such things, “if ever there’s a fire, I’m grabbing this, this, and this,”
Not so.
We have our pajamas.
I grabbed kids and ran like hell.

On top of that, Companion’s car was engulfed in flames.
My car literally exploded.
Homeless and carless all in one night.

We are currently at my parent’s.
I will update when possible.

Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers.

I’ve set up a chipin widget (see right. IE6 users scroll down, sorry). This is linked directly to Melissa’s PayPal acct. Please contribute as much as you can. You do not need a paypal account to help.

Melissa’s lads also wear clothes in the following sizes: 10/12 and 4T. I don;t know how to start getting things directly to her yet but please put anything you have to one side and I’ll return to this subject hen I know more.

Please help. I’d really like to have Melissa get a sizeable amount of money from the autism community. This goes beyond any neurodiversity/vaccine/genetic research issue. Please help and please pass this on. Retweet if you’re a Twitter user and blog about it yourself if you’re a blogger.

Thanks you in advance.

In addition to help from people here–

She may want to check out autism cares

Can she/we get her local news media involved? I’d like to see her community rally around her too. I want to post this on the ‘boards’ too, but I’m a little nervous that it might get buried or ignored because of the lack of a ‘news story’. Let us know more about her wishes if you can and I’ll beat the sides of the boards until help flows from there. I have no idea of her personal situation and whether she wants to keep low-key as to her identity and/or location, but if there is any time to put her hand out and say ‘help’, this is the time…

I can’t find that dang-ed book on the internet, that basically gave you some real quality hints for what to do after a fire from a practical standpoint. I sent it to someone who this had happened to, and it proved very helpful…

I saw a retweet and read through the blog to try to find a location, did a RT and aske you in a tweet if you knew what State they live in. I did not get a reply and also could not even find a name of this person on the blog.

Nice to now have a name associated with the Mom. My son is size 10/12 so that is something we have extra of, especially with summer camp being cancelled and plenty of shorts and now going to ESY and need to find out if they wear the uniform for that.

I have toys too, but with the mess that my State is in now (CA) and my rent increase, loss of SSI increase set for July 1st and maybe a pay deduction not sure what I can send.

tweet me info whenever you get more updates.

    Hi everyone, I’m the Mom…

I am absoultely humbled at the rate everyone is pulling together for my family. I am completely overwhelmed and at a loss for words. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

Kev- I honestly don’t know what to say (with tears streaming down my face). Thank you, and my love to you and your family.

You’ve wrangled teachers, case workers and school administrators; fought with insurance companies, doctors and therapists. You’re going to be pressed even harder over the coming months dealing with this; please if there’s anything that you need, reach out and have your local community and the autism community help out.

Good luck, reach for the reserves of your inner strength and God Bless,

    Bill

Thank you. I hadn’t read through all the comments, but we are in Michigan, US. My blog is mommydearest1514.blogspot.com/ or just google The Quirk Factor – it should be the first thing that pops up.

Thank you again, everyone, for your kind thoughts and support.
    Melissa
