We’ve had a lot of discussion on Dr. Wakefield and his retracted paper. But seeing the actual paper with big red letters saying “RETRACTED” was something I was waiting for. I thought others might like to see it as well.
So, here is the first page of Dr. Wakefield’s article as it appears now.
This paper has caused so much harm in the autism communities. Too bad it won’t go to rest quietly.

How much b/millions was spend in research that could have been spent looking for the causes of the disorder have instead been diverted to investigate the “link to vaccines” ?
Laurent raises a very good point. I agree that it is time time to ask ourselves how misconduct on the scale determined by the GMC in respect of the three doctors, went unchecked and unhindered. But for the intervention of Brian Deer and his excellent coverage of the entire debacle, bringing it into the public domain, I have to honestly wonder where it might all have ended.
Not least, questions now need to be asked, if not an investigation ordered up at the Royal Free Hospital,to determine how it was that, vulnerable, mentally challenged children became victims of risky invasive procedures which were not clinically indicated while they were within the confines of the RFH. It’s difficult to believe that no mechanisms exist within the framework of a hospital to protect children from uneccessary suffering via procedures which are not clinically indicated or in their best interests, making it almost certainly a case of regulatory failure. Surely any failures on the part of the hospital hierarchy to intervene and prevent these children from becoming victims whilst under their care, needs to be investigated immediately. Support services and use of RFH facilities were required by the doctors to carry out their intentions so there can be little argument as to their involvement. The Childrens and Young Persons Act 1933 Section 1(1)makes it illegal for anyone over the age of 16 to expose a person under the age of 16 to anthing “likely to cause him unecessary suffering or injury to health”.
It seems that the only person to chance upon this awful situation with insight into how wrong it all was, and empathy for the plight of the children, was the investigative journalist Brian Deer. Let’s all be grateful that he did!
Though I found this also posted on AoA, I wanted to share it here. It is the text of a speech by Charlie Chaplin at the end of his only talkie film, The Great Dictator. THe speech is so moving, so heart wrenching and so true even now, that it inspires me in my fight for equality for all of us on the Spectrum. To fight for the dignity we should already have as members of the human race that others would take from us!
