Brian Deer nominated for Specialist Journalist of the Year and News Reporter of the Year

25 Feb

Brian Deer, the investigative journalist who broke the story of Andrew Wakefield’s improprieties in his autism research, has been nominated for “Specialist Journalist of the Year” and “News Reporter of the Year”. The Press Gazette lists all the nominees in their piece The Press Awards: The Times leads with 18 nominations. For other non-UK residents, I’ve been told that The Press Awards are akin to the Pulitzer Prize in the US.

The article doesn’t cite the reason for Mr. Deer’s nominations, but it is a pretty safe bet that his articles on Andrew Wakefield in the BMJ had a lot to do with it. Links to those articles are below:

Secrets of the MMR scare: How the case against the MMR vaccine was fixed

Secrets of the MMR scare : How the vaccine crisis was meant to make money

Secrets of the MMR scare: The Lancet’s two days to bury bad news

Congratulations, Mr. Deer. It was a lot of hard work. Glad to see it recognized.

Well done Mr Deer. I hope this serves as some compensation for all the nonsense that has directed his way.

Excellent news. Brian Deer deserves whatever kudos come his way. He’s earned it with hard work, abuse and the real investigative effort seen so rarely these days. Cheers Mr Deer!

I think this would be an excellent signal to the anti-vax crowd that the rest of the main stream media recognizes the reality that vaccines don’t cause autism.

“I see the site got mobbed by Mr Deer`s follower`s?Thats urinated on the party a bit has it not?”

I’ve been laughing at that for the last day. Good job making it clear that Brian Deer’s efforts are still relevant.

    Brian Deer nominated?
For the UK equivalent of the PULITZER?
    PUL eeeeeez !!!

Since when do the Brits reward lame duck, “spoon-fed-with-garbage-from-special-interest-groups” aka pharma/govt coveruppers?
The guy has never had an original thought, ever.

And he’s a stalker to boot.

Mr.Deer, Sir, I want to see your tax returns and income statements from 1998 to 2010.

And please, don’t cut and paste some statement or other from some newsy journal or other, try and respond in your OWN words, for once. In fact, don’t respond here except to provide a link to your site where you have put up those pesky income statements for the public to see. Remember, we want to see all the details from 1998-2010.

And no, I am not an ardent Wakefield fan as such, I just take issue with the way he has been treated by all the rubber necking verbal nitwits…nobody in the real world CARES that he wanted to find/ patent/ profit off of a ” new and safer”vaccine by the way, that would have been the point wouldn’t it mate?
” New” and ” Safer” vaccine…one that didn’t slam ” predisposed” children into regression….people like David Andrews ( above) are rather predisposed to verbal regression but one wouldn’t KNOW until he actually opened his mouth….parents didn’t KNOW that their child could be/ might be ” predisposed” to ” mitochondrial dysfunction” (sic) until they got vaccines (?) and ” causally” got the ” mitochondrial dysfunction” ASD, PDD….etc etc

And to all the other sycophants: Mitochondrial Dysfunction is exaccerbated,or rather…vaccines are CAUSAL to Mitochondrial Dysfunction which is part of the regression into Autism/ or PDD
and while we may argue the pros and cons of MMR vaccine, DPT vaccine has an even bigger list of table injuries and a much larger pool of documented injuries…..let no one forget that ultimately while you blah blah blah on about Wakefield and Deer the REAL issue is being patently delegated to the shadows.
The REAL issue is the one about the children and their families who are dealing with catastrophic issues on a daily basis.

You are all so caught up in the red flag herringbone of this oh so declasse’ OLD NEWS when meanwhile, back in the real world of original thought research has shown that PDD and Autism are metabolic and neurological disorders, characterized by:

    nutritional abnormalities
    vitamin and mineral deficiencies
    fatty acid imbalances
    gastro intestinal issues
    inflammation
    oxidative stress
    immune system issues
    mitochondrial dysfunction…and more.

These symptoms are all grounded in Science, yet doctors are not approaching these as part of the care or treatment of the children. There is only ” management” of the issue, not identify and treat, going down the list one at a time. And while doing this might not give a child a CURE, it sure would make the child more comfortable and improve their quality of life, and that of their parents and siblings!

If one of you presented with these symptoms you would be subjected to a battery of tests, but once an ” ASD” has been handed down, doctors develop a schetoma towards their patients.

For shame on doctors, caving in to the herd mentality and putting their heads in the sand while people like B. Deer get to run amok and stalk and obfiscate the issue with his pasty, patsy “wanna na na ness” !

Gasp ! I provided cites, though I am sure many will call them
” poorly cited” but you know what, I don’t expect many if any will even bother to read and think on the implication of what these referenced works may mean. This would mean” big picture thinking” which clearly is lacking here, where everyone is still yapping about something that happened more than a decade ago.

@ Sullivan, you are wrong, Brian Deer is irrelevant.
and the Queen will NEVER invite him to tea.

@daedalus2u: ” signal to the anti-vax crowd that mainstream media

gosh, I wasn’t aware that on some planets ( clearly yours) it is the mainstream media that practises medicine….

    Ms. Snyder:

Gasp ! I provided cites, though I am sure many will call them poorly cited” but you know what, I don’t expect many if any will even bother to read and think on the implication of what these referenced works may mean.

Well, I see that. The reaction is more of: your point? That is a very disjointed list of cites, and really have nothing to do with Mr. Deer’s articles. But let us go through them for fun:

    1- Virology Journal 2010, 7:52
Origin of measles virus: divergence from rinderpest virus between the 11th and 12th centuries
Yuki Furuse, Akira Suzuki and Hitoshi Oshitani*

Okay, interesting from a historical viewpoint, and the use of gene sequencing.

    2- PNAS February 15, 2011 vol. 108 no. 7 3047-3052
Normal gut microbiota modulates brain development and behavior
    Rochellys Diaz Heijtza, et al

In mice! And has nothing to do with measles. So what?

    3- Expert Opin Pharmacother. 2009 Sep;10(13):2127-43.
Autism: an emerging ‘neuroimmune disorder’ in search of therapy.
Theoharides TC, Kempuraj D, Redwood L.

Again, so what? It is a review, and looks more like an opinion piece. Perhaps someone with access to the whole paper can shed light on to its significance.

    4- J Toxicol Environ Health B Crit Rev. 2008 Oct;11(8):660-80.
Potential for early-life immune insult including developmental immunotoxicity in autism and autism spectrum disorders: focus on critical windows of immune vulnerability.
    Dietert RR, Dietert JM.

Again, so what? It involves everything from actual diseases to dust.

    5- J Immunotoxicol. 2008 Oct;5(4):401-12.
Developmental immunotoxicology (DIT): windows of vulnerability, immune dysfunction and safety assessment.
    Dietert RR.

So? What does it have to do with vaccination?

    6- Hum Exp Toxicol. 2008 Feb;27(2):129-34.
The managed immune system: protecting the womb to delay the tomb.
    Dietert RR, Piepenbrink MS.

More from the same veterinarian as two others above. It really has nothing to do with vaccines. And from what I read about Dr. Dietert in Prenatal toxicity linked to immune dysfunctions in later life, I am sensing a wee bit of crankitude:

Focusing on studies of herbal and fungal chemicals, the Dieterts scoured the literature and found that some of the chemicals appear to be particularly promising when taken at appropriate doses. These include: Astragalus; Echinacea (purple coneflower); sang-hwang shiitake, reishi, maitake and snake butter mushrooms, black seed, Asian ginseng, milk vetch root, wild yam, Sophoro root and Greek clover (all of these also go by various other names).

@ Chris, yes, I rather expected that the dim pinprick specialists here wouldn’t have a clue.

My suggestion….read, think, ponder and try to expand your horizon, your mouth really is connected to your asshole in ways wholly unanticipated.
And lest you thik I am being rude, I am not.
We are an integrated system of functions, of cause and effect
( and affect), interdependant upon one another. A fleshy deck of cards.

And, vaccines are not the ONLY or SINGLE cause of ASD, rather it is a host of cascading issues culminating in catastrophic neurological and metabolic dysfunction.

As soon as one gets hooked on only ONE potential answer the rest is doomed to failure….

The answers are clearly not relevant to mainstream medicine, or media, but they sure as hell are relevant to the parents, and to the children affected, I imagine.

” crankitude”, must be something from your planet, perhaps the same one where David lives and has mainstream media practising medicine. Why don’t ye all go back there, take Brian Deer with you, he”ll take good care of you, if you are really ill he may let you fondle his Pull itz er….

@ Dinah, still making ill informed comments? “The REAL issue is the one about the children and their families”.
Umm, that would be the majority of people commenting here. Those of us who live every day with ASD. And find time to read and comment on the odd informative blog.

Those 8 characterisations you post above sound like something straight out of a bio medical textbook. My son does not have any of the 8 ailments you list. And I have a suspicion would not have any of the, “…and more”. Would that mean according to you that he is not ASD? I am starting to think you really don’t know very much about the Autism Spectrum Dinah.

  17. Julian Frost March 2, 2011 at 06:48 #

    @ Dinah,

lest you thik I am being rude, I am not.

Right, because calling us “dim pinprick specialists” who “wouldn’t have a clue” is the height of good manners.

vaccines are not the ONLY or SINGLE cause of ASD.

Multiple studies, including one in Denmark that looked at over half a million children, found no correlation between Autism and vaccines. The only “studies” that found a link were those done by Wakefield and his associates, and Wakefield faked his data.

As soon as one gets hooked on only ONE potential answer the rest is doomed to failure.

My Irony Meter just exploded. For years, antivaxxers like you were adamant that vaccines were the one true cause of Autism. Your comments sound like backpedalling.

My Irony Meter just exploded. For years, antivaxxers like you were adamant that vaccines were the one true cause of Autism. Now that there is hard evidence that vaccines don’t cause Autism, you claim that it’s just one cause among many.

Ms Snyder – you have one final chance to establish your interest in debating people as oppose to sneering at them. Make good use of it.

    • Kev March 2, 2011 at 11:14 #

Ms Snyder, I got the latest diatribe from you directed to me. It won;t be approved as it was just another sneery ego-fest. Bye bye.
