Watch Frontline’s Vaccine War online

28 Apr

I’ve only been able to watch the first few minutes so far, but I wanted to make this available.

(I’ve emailed asking if there is a captioned version)

If you want to read–written interviews:

Jenny McCarthy
She’s an actress, celebrity and activist. Her son was diagnosed with autism following a series of vaccinations, and she’s helped organize a movement of parents concerned about a vaccine-autism link.

Cynthia Cristofani, M.D.
A pediatric intensivist who takes care of children who need critical care, Cristofani decided to start documenting the rare cases of vaccine-preventable illness that turned up in her Portland, Oregon ICU.

Anthony S. Fauci, M.D.
He is an immunologist and the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases [NIAID].

Alvaro and Myrian Fontan
They watched in anguish as their 40 day-old baby Vanessa — not yet old enough for the pertussis vaccination — fought for her life.

J.B. Handley
A businessman whose son was diagnosed with autism, Handley co-founded with his wife the autism advocacy site Generation Rescue.

Paul Offit, M.D.
Co-developer of a vaccine for rotavirus, the leading cause of severe diarrhea in children, Offit is chief of the infectious diseases division at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Saw it. I think it would have been better if there had been a 10 minute rant by JBJr. He could have followed right after McCarthy and Handley.

It will be captioned within a week, most likely; PBS is generally very good about this sort of thing.

Watched it and enjoyed it. Having to listen to Handley was much more irritating than reading him, but I thought it was a well constructed piece overall. Unfortunately, the antivaxxers are out in force in the comments section on pbs, whining about how biased and terrible and meaaaaaaaan it was. Because science and evidence are biased towards reality, and we can’t have a documentary that supports reality! Or something.

“Autism = brain injury”? That’s bollocks, Handley!

As for the reason for non-vaccination being that “vaccines are not safe”, Jenny – stop talking out of your arse!

I’m getting too pissed off with these idiots … I’m posting this and hoping I don’t have to say something else to those dipshits.

Wouldn’t it be something if they actually did come up with a “cure” for autism, and it turned out to come in the form of a – vaccination? 😉

  6. ANB April 28, 2010 at 19:59 #

You can prevent some types of autism with a vaccine. ; -)

That’s actually not farfetched, Clay, as infection during pregnancy can increase the risk that the child will be diagnosed with ASD:

    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20414802

Some of those illnesses–and thus cases of ASD–might be preventable by vaccination.

      Clay, Brian, ANB,

first–ANB is correct. At least one form of ASD is preventable by vaccine. Congential Rubella Syndrome (CNS) is a cause of autism. By preventing rubella, autism has been prevented.

Tom Insel spoke at one of the parent conventions a few years back. I can’t remember which one. Could have been the one where the HBOT chamber started smoking. Anyway, he mentioned the possiblity of a vaccine to prevent autism.

To say that wasn’t accepted graciously by the audience would be a vast understatement.

Have you noticed the new “frame” of the anti-vaxers following this show? It basically amounts to “we too have scientists and doctors on our side, but they are being ignored.” The thing is, they might have a handful of scientists and doctors on their side. It would not have been fair for PBS to make it appear as though there’s an equivalent number of scientists and doctors on both sides. That sort of “balance” is just not right.

    Besides, Wakefield was there.

    • Sullivan April 29, 2010 at 05:09 #

      Joseph,

Yeah, that “frame” is pretty poor. They want to make a false comparison, “look, our Dr. Jay is on the same level as Dr. Offit” Well, they are both pediatricians. One has done actual research, the other hasn’t.

The researcher got on the air.

As to Wakefield, I guess they have admit even to themselves that he is a liability. Let’s face it, he doesn’t help their cause at all.

Dr. “Bob”? What was he really going to add? “Hi, I’ve made up my own vaccine schedule. I can’t tell you it is any safer because, let’s face it, there is no research to back it up. Please ignore the fact that by claiming it is ‘safer’ I instill fear in people by implying the regular schedule is unsafe”.
