Trump administration seeks to weaken disabled Americans’ access to community-based services
When I was young, people like my kid were institutionalized. Access to community, either in their residence or their daily activities, was limited. Which is a nice way of saying, a lot of people never saw the outside of an institution. I don’t want to go back. I don’t want to think that after I […]

Dramatic Cuts in New NIH Research Funding Across the Board
NIH autism research funding has collapsed since Mr. Kennedy became HHS Secretary. I wrote about this in my open letter to the IACC. Then I got curious: are the cuts limited to autism, or is this happening across NIH? The answer: it’s everywhere, and it’s worse than I expected. Below is a graph I made […]

Open letter to the IACC: Autism research is stalled. Get secretary Kennedy to make new autism research grants.
Secretary Kennedy has cut back on autism research, and you can act. You should act. You must act. Here are data from NIH Reporter on new NIH autism grants by fiscal year. I pro-rated the results from 2026, since the fiscal year ends in September. This graph shows only those grants which are new in each fiscal […]

The new White House ballroom won’t cost taxpayers anything. That is, as long as you don’t value the east wing. Or, Surprise! Trump lied.
Yes, this is a different topic than typical for this blog. But, let’s consider a simple and obvious lie by our president: the As is typical for this president, this project involves multiple lies. Here are but two. First, the White House would not be changed itself. Just added to. As noted in a recent […]

Reportedly, Mark Blaxill is a CDC “Senior Advisor”. Remember, this is not The Onion.
How does one recapture trust in the public health system? I can tell you one way to make it worse. Put Mark Baxill to work at the CDC. Mr. Blaxill is a long time anti-vaccine activist who has done a lot of harm promoting the “vaccines cause autism” lie. We on this blog have been […]

Speaking of which, Dorothy Spourdalakis has another court appearance coming up today.
Let us know, if there are any significant changes in the status of this murdering mother and/or the caretaker, who, the last time we had a status report, were scheduled to stand trial for the premeditated murder of young Alex.
Thanks Narad.
Next court appearance is on November 19. I’m not hauling my ass over to 26th & California on public transit (although it beats the other jury-duty assignment locations) to view the case file.
I’d like for the sentencing of Kelli Stapleton to be over and done with, so that her “case” does not become another in a long list of martyrs who just couldn’t handle her autistic child.
I checked out internet news outlets and the sentencing of Kelli Stapleton will not take place until Wednesday, at the earliest. The sentencing judge allowed Kelli’s ex-husband and a forensic psychiatrist to testify (for the defense), yesterday.
Since Kelli’s arrest, her friends took over her blog and were fundraising for $20,000 for an expert witness. They raised $50,000 and I believe the expert witness is that psychiatrist, who, according to news outlets, claimed Kelli was insane at the time of the crime and is still insane.
Kelli was sentenced to 10 – 22 years today. Much less than she deserved, but apparently that is a significant sentence for her plea bargain-reduced charge of child abuse: http://bigstory.ap.org/article/106a1b928f7043268b93738676507eba/sentencing-mom-who-tried-kill-autistic-girl
I appreciate hearing this. It’s about in line what I thought would happen. First degree child abuse has an open ended term–no minimum and a maximum of life. Second degree has a maximum of 10 years. I was expecting on the order of 10 years.
Apparently the insanity argument failed. I don’t know her, of course, but the idea of “my kid drove me insane so I thought I’d kill her and ‘take her to heaven’ ” did not sit well with me.
